The EPIDERMIS project

Comparing plant leaf epidermis cell morphology by means of bright field microphotography

Plant leaf epidermal cells often show complex and highly specialized shapes. We find great morphological variations between different species, but is there a similarity in the epidermis cell shape between species of the same family? Does the cell shape tell us something about the environmental factors a plant is facing? Or which other influences could be the cause for these complex shapes?

The EPIDERMIS project hopes to bring a bit of light on this topic by comparing cell morphologies of various species from several families with the help of bright field microphotography.
